What is a ‘Gated Manual’ Gearbox?
The gated manual is called so because each gear slots into a milled gate, the chances of a mass-market new car ever being made with a gated manual are low, in fact, they have almost always been found in exotic cars.
If you've ever wondered 'what is a manual gearbox?' you'll likely have seen cars like the Ferrari F355 or later Audi R8.
The artistic design of the gated manual has made it something of an extra appeal as cars become increasingly filled with technology rather than fine metals and wood to separate them.
As ever with a gated manual, you'll find the shifts are slightly harder but much more satisfying, but today, in all but the very rarest of supercars, the gated manual is gone.

    Here in the United States I was under the impression that the Boxster S had 315HP?

    • @themilesdriven
      @themilesdriven Час назад

      Hi, the Boxster S has the same power globally but you are correct at 315 ‘hp’. To clear up the confusion, I’ve quoted bhp in the video, this gets confused with hp a lot (the power measurement commonly used in the USA) but the two are different measurements. In Europe the power figure PS (metric horsepower) is used. In Australia they use kW. All the numbers are the same total output though. This is my fault as the U.K officially use PS but most people still talk in bhp. The Boxster S has 315hp/315PS/311bhp/235kW 👍

    Thanks for the comprehensive review. I love my 2015 F-Type R, but it is as you say "tail happy." So much so, that when one gives it a bit too much gas getting on the freeway at 40 mph plus, the squirrely back end will put the fear of god in the driver. Reminds me of ridding my motorcycle as a kid on muddy trails. Fun, but not for the faint of heart.

    so is there any major difference from 2015 to 2016 mustang 5.0 ?

    • @themilesdriven
      @themilesdriven 16 часов назад

      The 5.0-liter underwent some changes between the 2015 and 2016 models but they are all minor. Horsepower remained the same. The core differences are that the 2016 model saw minor tweaks in the variable camshaft timing system and optimized the cylinder head design for better airflow. The 2016 also revised the exhaust system which altered the sound. The 2016 also added better cooling to help sustain performance even on longer drives or track driving. I think there is also a software change that updated ECU to fine tune throttle response for smoother performance. I’m not sure if this was done in all markets for 2016 though. Core engine components remained the same 👍

    On the 3.6L, the high-failure items I've experienced are: (1) leaky hydraulic motor mounts, (2) thermostat stuck open, (3) cracked/leaky plastic oil cooler. Earlier models also had defective rocker arms, but thankfully mine have been good. On a long drive this winter, I also experienced a failed fuel injector at around 140k miles, despite getting the fuel injection cleaning service at the dealership the year before. Not only did I end up replacing all 6 injectors (very dirty upon inspection), but driving home on a misfiring engine killed my passenger-side catalytic converter. Did the repairs myself. It was pricey -- Bosch injectors and new Walker catalyst cost ~$800. Overall, the WK2 is a very nice SUV. But it's not a Toyota. It must be maintained, and there are certain crappy parts that are just going to fail after significant mileage.

    My 2024 Cayman GTS 4.0 still grinds second gear. It happens randomly and it doesn’t matter if the car is cold or warm. It doesn’t matter if the clutch is fully engaged. What I do now is I go from 1st to neutral for one second then to second gear. This has avoided the grind.

    A pretty reasonable review as someone who's owned a Gen 2 Leaf for a year (plus other EVs). As for the charging connectors based on another comment, CHAdeMo only affects DC Rapid Charging. For home / public chargers usually in car parks you have the second connector which is either Type 1 / J1772 in the American Markets or Type 2 in Europe. CCS 1/2 is then a Type 1 / 2 socket with two additional pins underneath. The one pictured in the video is actually the Type 2 CCS used over here in europe.

    • @themilesdriven
      @themilesdriven День назад

      Yes I should have been clearer on the charger affecting fast chargers only due to a second connector, thanks for highlighting this 👍

    Common 981 issue in hot climate areas is door card delamination. Ugly and annoying. Fix is ridiculously expensive so I did it myself. Easy enough except for one big mistake. Not only does the vinyl delaminate but the plastic frame also warped. Didn’t realize this until I put it back together. Looking for a fix now. Other wise my 2013 Boxster has been flawless with 36000 miles.

      Hi, do you know its ownership and service history? As long as it hasn’t got any of the common faults mentioned then 100k on a Mazda isn’t something that would put me off, but some recent service history that shows items like suspension mounts, bushings, brakes, tires would be a big bonus as these can quickly add up and are usually overlooked when buying a car 👍

    Why wouldn't you buy a broken XC90 especially the V8 models? I bought my 2005 XC90 V8 for $1300 with 212k miles on the clock. It Ran poorly but shifted fine. All I asked the seller was if it made any knocking sounds from the engine bay. She sent me a video. It didn't. I drove an hour out to get it. No, it wasn't in pristine condition. The headliner sagged, the CEL was on, the sunroof didn't work nor the passenger power seat. It was dirty and grungy there were small things that were broken but, I was hopeful. After some spark plugs (which were easy to do) and 2 used junk yard coils (I picked up all 8 from another V8 XC90), the engine purrs like a kitten. I drained and filled the trans 4 times to get all the old fluid out. Know it shifts better. I replaced the radiator, refelted the headliner, fixed vacuum leaks, added a trans-cooler from the T6 XC90's, replaced sway bar links, ball joints and lower control arms, headlight assemblies, lift supports. I'm the process of replacing a dead relay on the CEM and replacing/rebuilding the siren control module with parts from a junk yard one. You're probably thinking, "Man! All that sounds expensive, hard and complicated! What if I told you, I don't have DICE/VIDA. I didn't use special tools and most of these jobs were done during a Saturday afternoon every weekend. So, $1300... With all the parts, I'm invested ~$2200. In this very capable, peppy SUV. You can't beat that! Yes, there are about ~30 hours of my labor in this SUV. If I had to put a dollar amount to my labor, it'd be $25/hr. That $750 dollars in labor! So, we'll say $3k all-in. That's still not bad for a 5 passenger (and yes, i know it can sort of seat 7...) V8 AWD SUV! I tried to find something better than this for the money and have yet to do so even with all the time and money I have in this rig! I plan on buying more of these since they're cheap, relatively easy to fix (if you don't have to put a motor or trans in one...) and sell for $3k-5k at the end of the day in good shape. If you find one for ~$1500 BUY IT! FIX IT! (SELL IT! If you're inclined to do so...) Or enjoy your V8 AWD Luxury SUV! They are beasts in the snow and for the money, you can't buy anything cheaper and equally capable! Well... not a luxury SUV or truck within the last 20 years or so... That doesn't need major engine/trans work or is rusted out (GM/Ford/MOPAR), or out of reach and outside of budget (Toyota/Nissan) or outrageously expensive to repair (Jaguar/Land Rover/BMW/Audi/Mercedes).

    Is this really titled: Avoid Common Faults and Problems? How about Chronic faults: "Everything to do with the farcical S400 Hybrid system"!!! Mercedes covered up all Generated/Charging system failures which are a very expensive design failure! I can't believe you didn't mention the S400 and didn't say a single word about the major issues that turned this car into an expensive driveway ornament! Why? Did Mercedes sponsor this video, because I find it hard to understand why you mention everything benign that can go wrong, but ignore something that can cost you $15,000 to repair, strange really!

    • @themilesdriven
      @themilesdriven 5 дней назад

      Hi, really good question and one I hadn't thought about before. I wouldn't class either as engineered better or worse in terms of failure rate or weak spots due to heat or component stress. As an interesting side note, Porsche were using a V4 engine until 2017 in the 919 endurance race car, likely the restrictions of packaging the engine within the bodywork meant a flat 4 was out of the question, but it does show the brand's was looking a forced induction and four cylinder development years before the 718 arrived.

    If the car was designed under BMW ownership then why does it have PSA/ford engines?

    • @themilesdriven
      @themilesdriven 5 дней назад

      Unlike the L322 that was set for release just after Ford's purchase of LR, the Sport arrived four years later, meaning a lot of the development from the initial concept to production chassis was done under Ford management. This is one of the reasons the L322 Range Rover is monocoque but the L320 Range Rover Sport has the Discovery 3 frame. This also meant that the diesel engines were Ford/PSA. The L322 dropped the BMW diesel, and BMW petrol that it had from 2002 to 2005 and swtiched to take the TDV8 Ford/PSA engine and the Jaguar petrol in 2006 when it was updated under Ford ownership. The Range Rover Sport has Jaguar engines for petrol (AJV8 4.4, Supercharged 4.2 and Supercharged 5.0) only the diesels are Ford/PSA and the 3.0TDV6 of facelift models has a lot of LR/Jaguar development as that is the engine they wanted originally, while PSA wanted a 2.5, so the early 2.7 is a compromise. Hope that clears this up 👍

    As new as the 2005 model used to be, I saw the problem was the leak of brake fluid from clutch pedal and also the noise from the rear suspension ball joint when release the clutch after the first or reverse gear is engaged. Otherwise it a good vehicle I can't afford to loose.

    I recently bought a 2018 Mk7.5 manual GTI 4 door with only 21000km. Final year with the manual option. It has the infotainment pack, I'm not sure if that was standard in Australia. Good thing is that it has dual direct and port fuel injection. I think port injection was deleted in the 2019 year. A manual 7.5 with port injection and later production turbo is in something of a sweet spot. Engine is turbine-smooth, returns 16km/l, 45mpg on the highway. Without the safety pack, I didn't get adaptive cruise, but adaptive seems to displace the speed limit function, which I do use now and then. With the light clutch, smooth shifting and turbo torque this car is very enjoyable to drive. I'm certainly going to change the engine oil every 6 months, not leave it to 15000km as VW recommends. Is there a difference in suspension? Meaning M2C is softer or harder than M2?

    • @themilesdriven
      @themilesdriven 7 дней назад

      If I’m remembering correctly the Competition is 20mm lower. It also has different shock absorbers and stiffer chassis making is sharper but it won’t ride as well as the regular M2 over poor road surfaces 👍

    My 2015 V8s is an animal. I like the tail-happy RWD and I do believe he 495 Hp is an under-rating to build up the gap between V8s & the great R for marketing. I also like the hydraulic power steering and overall lighter weight as compared to AWD. This being said, it can be scary at 1st and would be very easy to wreck. The instant acceleration at any speed is addictive and the loud exhaust is silly fun. I hope to never sell this one of a kind treasure.

    2.4d5 with polestar.. Goes like stink but omg the build quality of the interior is poor. Creaks from dash, console, doors, back shelf... Better with a kia.

    I’ve been shopping for a PRHT NC Miata. Is there an advantage of the club or the grand touring? I like the colored top for the club but usually like leather seating which you find in the GT. But the club is so cool looking. Perhaps giving up the leather seats is a small sacrifice?

      Don’t forget a common fault can be as little as 0.5-1% of production, so as long as you know what to look for, you can buy a good one 👍

    No mention of the coolant pipes failure….this is big. Early versions had the two piece pipes that crack a leak, and even the redesigned pipes from Jaguar, they still can fail on the connection ends because of getting brittle. Most of us have replaced these plastic pipes with aluminum ones. If failure, a huge risk of a blow, leak, over heat and blow the engine.
